This product is the perfect way to help students REALLY learn those obscure transition words and phrases (not just the time order ones that they pick up quickly!) that can be difficult to define and model! It has 31 words, so it can be used as a weekly activity for the whole year! It has posters with an easy to understand definition and example that can be hung up, used for interactive journals, or used at group work/centers. The words that it includes are aligned with the ones tested on 4th and 7th grade STAAR tests. This file also includes activities to help students categorize the words by meaning, create visuals and examples for each word, and use the words/phrases in their own writing. It also emphasizes to put a comma after the word or phrase when it is used at the beginning of a sentence.
In my own classroom, I use this as part of the daily ELA warmup. They complete the day by day chart activity for "Transition Word of the Week" ,and then the posters stay up on the transition word wall all year.
This product includes the following
1. Posters with a student friendly definition and example for the following 31 transition words and phrases:
First, next, then, finally, last
On the other hand
As a matter of fact
In the end
As a result
In other words
In the meantime
To sum it up
2. A daily warmup activity template that works with the posters to give students multiple exposures to the word and opportunity to practice and internalize the meaning
3. A group/independent activity similar to the daily warmup that can be used at any point in lesson or at stations
4. A "quick reference" for writing folder (blank copy to fill out as the words are learned and one prefilled out) on which words are categorized by meaning.
