Transition words are an important part of both reading and writing. They indicate a change in time, place, and purpose. They also help when making comparisons, pointing out the results of actions, and summing up text. Transition words help to ensure that a text flows smoothly from one point to another.
Whether you are trying to teach your students to identify transition words or you are trying to get them to use them in their writing, this center activity can help.
The following are 10 short reading passages that contain transition words. There are 2 versions of the passages included.
I would suggest laminating the larger print pages and having the students underline the transition words with a dry erase marker. This way, you can use the sheets over and over again. If you want to give each student their own copy, you can use the smaller print version and cut the sheets in half. Then, all you have to do is place them in your center or distribute them to your students.
