This differentiated cut-and-paste activity helps students master translating verbal sentences and stories (word problems) into equations. The first activity is easier with students given sentences to translate. The second activity is also sentence translation, but the same three numbers are used throughout the worksheet to increase the difficulty. The third activity is word problems which students must translate to equations. There is one “leftover” answer on each activity. This is a great activity for students to practice translating with a partner, in a small group, as part of review stations, or individually. Students should cut out all the pieces, match them with the correct answer, and glue the sets onto construction paper, notebook paper, or on the included worksheet. Each activity has a total of seven problems for students to work on.
