In this activity, students will sort verbal expressions into different operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, powers, and equals). This prepares students to learn to translate verbal expressions into algebraic expressions. Sorting the cards is a great way for kinesthetic learners to become involved in the activity, and the various fonts used help students with written expression deficits differentiate the cards. Other ideas for the activity include a memory match game, an activity where students create and translate their own phrases (activity sheet included), and a whole-group activity. See the preview for a full description of directions and tips for using the cards!
