In this hands-on introduction to geometric translations, students will cut out a figure and PHYSICALLY SLIDE it a given number of units on a coordinate plane, noticing how the moves affect the coordinates. Students follow simple steps to slide the trapezoid on the coordinate plane. They then record the coordinates in a table and look for the effects each translation has made.

This discovery activity does not teach students a rule for translations, but simply lets students discover that translating to the left and right effects the x-coordinate and translating up and down effects the y-coordinate.

Students will be asked to summarize what they noticed and make predictions about coordinates of different translations without an image.

All of the translations are done in Quadrant 1 so that students may easily see the effects on the coordinates. The last problem includes negative integers.
