In this hands-on introduction to geometric translations, students will cut out a figure and PHYSICALLY SLIDE it a given number of units on a coordinate plane. They will then record the coordinates in a table and look for the effects each translation has made. They will be asked to summarize what they noticed and make predictions about coordinates of different translations.
This aligns with common core standard 8.G.A.3: Describe the effect of dilations, translations, rotations, and reflections on two-dimensional figures using coordinates.
All of the translations are done in Quadrant 1 so that students may easily see the effects on the coordinates. The last problem includes negative integers.
