This resource is made up of three transportation themed math activities to practice number recognition (1-10), counting (1-10), naming emotions, creating patterns (AB, ABC, AAB, ABB), and shape recognition with naming emotions and fine motor skills practice, too.

There are print friendly versions of each.

Great to use for Transportation theme, or Things That Go theme.

Setup:

Review the skills/standards below and decide which (or all) standards will be part of your instructional goal.

Decide which activity printables you plan to use, print and cut where necessary.

Directions:

These activities can be done independently or during small group time.

Here is an overview of each activity

Counting Passengers on an Airplane - This math activity can be used to practice counting up to 10, number recognition, and expressing emotions. There are 10 airplane mats, 1-10, and faces showing faces (counters) with different emotions.

Creating Patterns with School Buses - This math activity is used to practice extending, duplicating, and creating simple patterns. There are 5 patterns: AB, ABC, AABB, AAB, and ABB. Each pattern has 3 practice bus mats with basic shapes and colors. There is also a blank bus mat for students to create their own pattern.

Pattern Block Mats - This math activity is used to learn common geometric shapes, putting shapes together to make a bigger shape, counting objects, and practice fine motor skills. If you do not have the pattern blocks, there is a template with all the shapes used for these mats included at the end of this resource.

Skills/Standards practiced:

This activity is designed to align with the Preschool Foundational and Kindergarten Readiness Standards used in my state, which are:

• CC.1.1 I can begin to count by 20 by ones.
• CC.1.3 I can understand numbers come before or after one another in a sequence 1-10.
• CC.2.4 I can represent a group of objects with the correct number.
• CC.2.4abc I can use one-to-one correspondence when counting objects. I can develop the ability to respond to the question “how many” after counting the objects in a set. I can understand that each number name in sequence 0–10 means one more.
• CC.2.5 I can count as many as 10 objects arranged in a line.
• CC.3.7 I can associate quantities with written numerals 1–10.
• SE/SS.2.5b I can describe [my own] feelings. OA.1.1 I can explore adding and taking away with concrete objects and patterns.
• OA.1.6 I can duplicate, extend, and create simple patterns.
• L.5b I can compare commonalities and differences by identifying opposites using descriptive words (e.g. big/little, happy/sad).
• CA.1.3b I can recognize and name colors.
• G.1.2 I can correctly name shapes.
• G.1.1 I can tell you the shape of an object.
• G.2.4 I can describe basic two and three dimensional shapes.
• G2.6 I can put together two shapes to make a bigger shape.
• PHS.1.1 I can exhibit fine motor coordination (small muscle).
