This project is an interdisciplinary unit project for seventh grade math and seventh grade geography. It can be edited to best suit your class needs. We chose to spread this project out through about two weeks with suggested due dates to keep the kids on track, but it can easily be changed to be completed in class through 2-3 class periods (45 min each).
Students are given the task to plan a vacation for five total people. They can work independently or with a partner creating their presentation and conducting research. Students will use what they have learned about climate zones, one-step equations, tax, tip, and proportions to research a destination in which they must find flights, a hotel, and a pizza restaurant while maintaining a given budget.
This assignment promotes family involvement as some students will need help researching flights and hotels. Be sure to provide your students with links to travel websites if necessary.
We find it has been beneficial to ask our students for feedback on this project after they have completed it to make improvements and changes for the following year. If you or your students have any suggestions to add to the project, please share your suggestions in the comments below.
