My seventh graders sit in groups. This system of Traveler Rules is my classroom management strategy for passing out and collecting materials when no one sits at the front of the row.
My Traveler Rules contain 31 rules for picking a kid in the group to be that day’s designated Traveler (the one who moves about the room). Now I have only seven or eight students moving, instead of all or none of them. It's great. And has worked fantastically since I first introduced it to my students.
There are 31 rules so that I never have to pick which rule to use--I simply use the rule that corresponds to the date. These rules are yours to edit and adapt so that they fit your classroom. I hope the system helps you to manage the students' movement about your room.
