Stafford's excellent narrative poem is so thoughtful, so moving, and so full of opportunities for teaching! Read the poem with students and together experience the beautiful, poignant scene and heartbreaking dilemma. Read it again and ask students to annotate the poem for word choice, imagery, and symbolism. Next, ask students to discuss the poem in small groups. The handout provided guides students toward thoughtful analysis. Students are now ready to write a two-paragraph essay which reveals their understanding of the narrative and its symbolic implications for all of us!
