These 3 chapters are incredibly suspenseful and fast paced. Throughout the chapters illustrations contribute to the suspense of the story and the actions of the characters.
Louis also adds to the suspense through the use of sound rich words and phrases like ‘silently and swiftly’ , ‘stood and panted’ , ‘approaching footsteps’ , ‘a group of men knocking at the front door’ and with onomatopoeias such as thumping, tap-tap-tapping.
Use this organizer for students to record vivid language: verbs, adverbs, and adjectives while reading these three chapters.
