With a partner or two, students will create a travel brochure for Stevenson's Treasure Island. What makes this rhetorical exercise a bit fun and challenging is that, as we all know, Jim Hawkins describes the island in rather ominous terms! This playful exercise invites students to do a closer reading of the imagery in the text, as well as to employ rhetorical strategies to make a rather tongue-in-cheek travel brochure!
Students will practice:
* close reading
* identifying imagery
* rhetorical strategies (ethos, pathos, logos, and kairos)
* loaded words (words with strong connotations
* combining text and image
