Role play activity (lasting about 1.5 - 2 hours) in which students must play First nations leaders and Government negotiators who need to come to an agreement on which lands will be used for reserves and what other benefits and items First nations groups will receive in exchange for forfeiting their ancestral rights to the rest of the land. Includes lesson plan outline, grid map, fact sheet on treaty formation to use in negotiations, and treaty contract / signature page. Canadian context (comes from a unit on settling the prairies in the 1870's), but still applies largely to US negotiations. Goes with Horizons text (SS 9 or 10). Includes step by step instructions for students on how to create a territory, what things were negotiated along with land rights, how to choose which land to establish reserves on and a "contract" to sum up negotiations and sign.
