This lesson plan uses tree pose to teach figurative language, an ELA standard, and write a simple poem. Then, students connect to the idea of supporting one another in partner tree and generate ideas of how to support each other as learners. If at all possible, take the students outside to experience tree pose with real trees!
Students begin this activity by going through their mindful movement for the day that is focused on "tree pose" where they work with a partner for support. Students then are prompted to think about trees in relation to their own bodies. They use this thought process to create poetry using figurative language!
You can choose to complete the activity independently, in small groups or as a whole group. The activity ends with the mindful movement while reflecting on their poetry and other ways to support their classmates in their community.
