Tree Reader's Theater: Why Conifers Stay Green in the Winter
This is a reader's theater script for the Sachems of Winter. I have used this in sixth grade.
The Sachems of Winter is a Seneca Indian Legend about why conifer (pine trees) keep their needles and stay green in the winter.
1. A two page script which includes the following 10 characters:
Hatoe (frost god)
Winter Sachems (the leaders of winter)
2. A question sheet for students to reflect on the legend and the main ideas. This includes an answer key.
3. A vocabulary list of words and definitions that you may want to pre-teach before using the script.
I use this when teaching the difference between deciduous and conifer trees, but it can also be used as a winter activity for reader's theater or as an activity when studying legends about stories that try to answer questions about why things are the way they are in the natural world.
