Students will enhance their science and common core reading and writing skills by learning about the value of trees and their impact on the environment. Students will read books and answer questions about key details from the text. They will also be asked to retell the story with details. Students will use informative texts to write facts about trees and deforestation. Students will also create a KWL chart and pose questions about trees and seek answers to those questions. They will apply the knowledge they have gained about deforestation and use their thinking skills to address this real life problem. Student will then be knowledgeable on why trees are important and what they can do to save trees. Students will then be able to make informed decisions, as well as make others aware.
Students will acquire greater knowledge of and compassion towards trees and their environment. They will learn about deforestation and gain a deeper understanding on how they can have an impact on environmental issues and make a difference in their local and global community. By becoming knowledgeable on the topic of deforestation, students will be able to teach others about the impact deforestation has on our environment/society and what they can do help stop deforestation and save trees.
This unit goes well with my TC Opinion/Persuasive Writing Unit. I suggest using them hand in hand.
