This lesson will introduce the students to triangles and quadrilaterals by having them construct their own on dot paper. It deeply engages students by allowing them the freedom to be creative. Students will not only learn the names and attributes of triangles and quadrilaterals, but they will also gain measurement practice by finding the measure of each side of each polygon in centimeters. They will understand the different varieties of the shapes by looking at what each other drew. For example, the students will see that trapezoids can vary greatly in their appearance. This lesson is common core aligned for the 7th grade, but can be used for many grade levels.
