I have created a no-frill poster that has on it pictures to help kids remember the various decoding strategies. In my class I call the decoding strategies “Tricky-Word Tricks”. I post it near my reading table for children to refer to during reading. I also run an extra copy of the poster and cut it apart and laminate it to make individual strategy cards that I set out on the reading table during reading instruction. When I am teaching a specific strategy I set that strategy card out as a visual reminder for the kids. Sometimes, I ask the kids to grab a card off the table and find a place in their reading where they used that strategy.
So, here you go! Here is my Reading Strategy Poster/ Reading Strategy Cards as well as a guide of how to use each strategy (you may copy the descriptors and share with them with your students’ parents, too).
