"Trim the Tree" is a Christmas articulation activity to use with students with a variety of speech sound production needs. The activity includes 10 Christmas / Winter themed words for each target sound, printed on a Christmas lights string. Target sounds include: /p, b, m, t, d, n, s, l, r, f, v, sh, ch, th/, S-blends, L-blends, and R-blends.
Give an Evergreen Tree to each student. Print 5 copies of each student’s target sound light string. Print 2 copies of the “burnt out strings” page. Place all materials face down on the table. Students take turns drawing a light string. If it contains their target sound, they practice saying the words on the string, then "trim their tree" (place the light string on their tree mat). If students draw a string that does not contain their target sound, they put it back (face down on the table). If students draw a burnt out string, they lose all their strings / cards. Player with the most light strings at the end is the winner!
NOTE- light strings contain target sounds in all word positions- initial, medial, and final. If a student is working in a specific position only, have him/her identify words on the string in their target position, and say these words multiple times (e.g. 5x/each).
Can be adapted for word, phrase, or sentence level, depending on the student's needs. Provide the student with a carrier phrase to use with the words, or instruct the student to generate a sentence using the target words.
