Help students review homophones and contractions, words that frequently cause usage and spelling errors. Great for native English speakers and ELL students alike, this game makes learning fun!
The words and contractions included in the game follow: affect/effect, to/too/two, accept/except, then/than, through/threw, right/write, whole/hole, your/you’re, their/there/they’re, its/it’s.
Before the game begins, the Power Point presentation briefly reviews the uses for the included homophones and contractions. After the review, there are four rounds for the game. In the first two rounds, students simply identify and write the correct word choices. In the third and fourth rounds, students must choose the correct words from the included word bank to complete the sentences. All that you will need is the ability to project a power point presentation, a ball (soft texture), some dark tape, and a trash can.
Research shows that students often learn best when they can move, and this game motivates them with their love of sports. When you put your students in heterogeneous groups for a game with friendly competition, it is an excellent way to meet the needs of all of your students and reward them for their success.
This activity makes excellent guided practice after instruction for the troublesome words. Then follow the game with independent practice. Instructions for both students and the teacher are included, along with a key.
