One of the things my students and I always do when watching a film is look for those things which are different from the original text. Troy, directed by Wolfgang Petersen and starring Brad Pitt and Eric Bana, has many characters and events that have changed from the original text of The Iliad by Homer. Probably the biggest change is the removal of any supernatural elements. It’s filmed as if it were a real, historical event. (And maybe it was.) However, there are other changes that were made to the events in the text beyond the elimination of the gods and goddesses. This activity provides you and your students a way to locate some of those differences by completing a chart exploring some changes and the possible reasons for them. A key is provided
There is also a small group discussion activity that follows the chart activity. This encourages students to explore their own opinions about the filmmaker’s decision to make those changes.
