This True or False Equation Sort Activity is meant to be used as a math center or a math by yourself activity. Common Core Standard 1.OA.7 asks that students truly understand the meaning of the equal sign. This activity can help them do just that!
After you have introduced the equal sign and worked with students on what the equal sign means this activity will move them toward independence and deeper understanding. Students are required to look at an equation and decide if it is true or false. To challenge students to really look closely at the equal sign, I have included equations written 3 ways (ex: 4+1=5, 9=4+4, and 10+5=13+2).
This download includes:
*3 different levels of difficulty for sorting (addition facts to 10,
subtraction facts to 10, and mixed addition and subtraction
*An answer key for each set (can be used just for the
teacher, or students can use it to check their own work).
*A recording sheet for students to fill out.
*Directions on how to set it all up!
*20 pages (not including direction pages).
Common Core Standard: Work with addition and subtraction equations. 1.OA.7. Understand the meaning of the equal sign, and determine if equations involving addition and subtraction are true or false. For example, which of the following equations are true and which are false? 6 = 6, 7 = 8 – 1, 5 + 2 = 2 + 5, 4 + 1 = 5 + 2.
