This activity is designed to help students build confidence working with addition and subtraction facts while also mastering the following standards:
CCSS 1.OA.D.7: Understand the meaning of the equal sign and determine if equations involving addition and subtraction are true or false.
CCSS 1.OA.D.8: Determine the unknown whole number in an addition or subtraction equation relating three whole numbers.
CCSS 2.OA.B.2: Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies.
I find this to be a challenging and thought-provoking activity. It is often a favorite of students who enjoy problem solving.
This pack includes two True or False pages for each of the following levels, in order of increasing complexity:
• Addition within 10
• Subtraction within 10
• Mixed +/- within 10
• Addition within 20
• Subtraction within 20
• Mixed +/- within 20
• Addition within 10 such as 5 + 2 = 4 + 3
• Subtraction within 10 such as 5 – 4 = 7 – 6
• Mixed +/- within 10 such as 5 + 4 = 10 – 1
• Addition within 20 such as 5 + 7 = 8 + 4
• Subtraction within 20 such as 14 – 7 = 15 - 8
• Mixed +/- within 20 such as 15 - 9 = 4 + 2
While working with these materials, students evaluate each equation and determine if it is true or false. For each true equation, they write “true” in the box below the equation. For each false equation, students either use a hole punch to remove the number in the box or cross the number in the box out. They then write a correct equation by changing the number that was in the box.
This activity is presented in a unique format, which I find captures the interest of my students.
Many thanks for stopping by and taking a look!
