Food for Thought:
What if you could live forever? Would you? What would your life be like?
Introduction: These questions of immortality, or the ability to live forever without dying, are magnificently addressed in the wonderful novel Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt. While the idea of being immortal would seem to be ideal, Babbitt shows how it is not as clear cut as it would seem through this fantasy involving her protagonist Winnie Foster, the timeless Tucks, an evil stranger, and a curious toad in the road.
The What: This packet of anticipation guides will guide our reading, inform our questioning and thinking, help assess our learning, and promote great discussions during our novel study of Tuck Everlasting.
How: Each anticipation guide contains guiding questions for each chapter of Tuck Everlasting. These guiding questions are based on the DOK (Depths of Knowledge) questioning system. Some questions are harder than others, with level one representing easier questions, levels two and three more challenging, and level four more difficult. These DOK questions provide essential differentiation and are great starting points for student and whole classroom discussions.
These guiding questions will serve as a nice introduction to and review of many literary concepts and skills, such as:
● Plot Chart
● Interpreting Figurative Language
● Tone and Mood
● Round vs. Flat Characters
● Author’s Purpose
● Citing Text Evidence
● Comparing and contrasting
● Making predictions and inferences
● Using context clues for unfamiliar vocabulary
● Much more
Why: By using these anticipation guides, you will foster a learning environment that encourages thought and discussion and promotes engagement while making your novel study of Tuck Everlasting feel as if it is truly immortal.
My students love working through these anticipation guides, and I love to teach with them.
With all that said, thanks for considering my product and, more importantly, for being a teacher.
