This study guide for is meant to help students analyze the novel by breaking it down two chapters at a time. They practice summarizing by creating GIST statements and utilize other methods of learning by drawing a symbolic picture. They are also prompted to find a significant quote from the chapters and explain why it is significant to them (analyzing and evaluating the text). At the end of the novel (and the packet) students write a reflective paragraph about the novel as a whole and then evaluate their own work with a self-assessment. Ideally, teachers can grade the packet on a regular basis as students complete the readings and even meet with students one on one to discuss the novel and evaluate how students are doing.
