This 7 page Word document is a synopsis of the plot of the novel in "Fill in the blanks" format. I have divided the novel into units, each of around 4 chapters. Each cloze test is a summary of that section, that students complete by filling in the gaps. There is a word bank with each section to assist students.
I find this a very useful approach with weaker students (who struggle to write their own summaries). It's a good way to ensure that all students know what has happened before moving on to the next part of the novel. This is also a good technique to use if you want to check that students have completed independent reading. Alternatively, you could use this resource as an aid to revision. Used this way, it suits both strong and weak students. The solution, which is included, provides a complete summary of the novel.
This is an active learning task. It forces students to think while they're working to complete it. You could redact the word banks to make the activity more challenging.
Students, particularly weak and EAL students, get a great sense of achievement from this activity.
There are 13 pages in total. The student exercise consists of 7 pages. The remaining pages contain the solution.
Download the preview file to see the assignment (and solution) for the Prologue and Chapters 1 - 4. Even if you don't purchase this product, it will give you a useful exercise with which to start your study of this thought-provoking novel.
