This lesson can be used for all elementary grades K-5 and can be used again and again with each week’s new spelling words. We know memorization is at the lowest, or beginning, levels of thinking. However, we still give traditional spelling tests because it’s always been done. With this lesson you and your students can enjoy the process of learning how to spell words with the Turbo Spelling Race activity.
In this activity students take turns trying to spell their words, getting to move their cars around the racetrack with each success. It can be played alone or against one or more other students to add excitement and competition. The first player to cross the finish line wins the Turbo Spelling Race!
Your students can also take their race tracks home to use as homework, where instead of just writing their words out five times each, writing them in sentences, etc., now both the students and their parents can have fun playing the turbo race while practicing their spelling words!
You can also use this same activity for other subjects as well. Turn it into Turbo Math Race and use your math vocabulary or problems. Science Turbo Race can also use vocabulary or science questions, as well as Turbo Social Studies Race.
Enjoy this fun and effective activity!
