The first activity included in this packet is the Turkey feather making numbers activity. This activity is meant to be a connecting activity for number sentences. If you have colored feathers (available at most craft stores), you can make this activity even more hands on. Students learn that numbers can be made many different ways. Using only two colors, students problem solve and manipulate various sets of colored feathers to find the combinations or addends that make larger sets. Then, they record their thinking and make representations of the combinations. They connect their thinking to symbols by writing corresponding number sentences.
Another activity included is the Turkey Feather Spinning Activity. Students in Pre-K through First will enjoy spinning a colored spinner, recording data using tally marks and graphing their results. You can tier this activity to meet the needs of your young learners by having them spin the spinner 10 times or 20. Students who need to work on larger numbers will have fun spinning, counting, and recording numbers up to 20. After graphing have students pair share with a friend and communicate math concepts such as: Which turkey feather they have most and least. Compare sets using greater than and less than or equivalent.
