This center is based on decomposing the numbers 5-10. How many different ways can we make each number? Students will match each numbered turkey with the feathers that add up to its number. Then they will record the addition sentences on their chart.
Start with only one or two turkeys at the center each day. Scatter feathers that belong and do not belong with the turkeys. Have students search and match the feathers to the turkey. Let them use manipulatives if necessary. They can record each completed turkey as they go.
After students have completed decomposing a number at the center, there is a worksheet they can complete on their own. It is great for homework, morning work, or seat work.
As the students become more fluent, have students race against one another. Give each student a different turkey and see who can find all of their turkey’s feathers first!
Let students color their own feathers to make their own headpiece to wear while at the center. Have fun!
