This Zip contains a mini-unit. The animated power-point entitled, Turkeys in Coolidge Corner is a fictional story, which tells about a turkey who caused a mini invasion in Brookline, MA. This power-point is useful for the teacher because it is set up to facilitate an interactive read-aloud with students. The main comprehension skill used in this story is drawing conclusions by making inferences. However, all good readers use a multiple comprehension skills and strategies as they read, so other skills and strategies have been included throughout this story. There is attention to vocabulary, providing pre-reading words as well as words to be figured out in the context of the story. Also, included in this file is a slide script to make reading the slides easier for the teacher.
There is a companion non-fiction article entitled, “Let’s Talk Turkey,” included in this file. This article is about turkeys, providing information about how turkeys came to Brookline, the history of turkeys in Massachusetts, and much more. At the end of the article there are close reading questions.
Finally, there is a a chart within this file, which lists many of the multi-syllabic words used in the story, Turkeys in Coolidge Corner. The syllables have been color coded in order to help the students decode the words. Breaking apart syllables has helped my students learn how to chunk word parts in order to aid their decoding of text.
