Turkey Trot is a series of 7 different activities/centers that explore the concept of base ten. The activities use base ten blocks (or you can use coins as a substitute) to explore adding/subtracting 1, 10, or 100 to a number, forms of a number (standard, expanded, base ten form - can have students write expanded form or other equations while playing), composing numbers (looking at various forms of numbers including more than 10 of different place values to create a number - example, 7 tens and 15 ones is 85), and using a picture of a number and adding to or subtracting from the given picture. The activities included are:
-Turkey Trot (2 versions ones and tens, and hundreds, tens, and ones) where students add or subtract 1, 10, or 100 to a number)
-Turkey Trouble Football (2 versions each with and without numbers and a recording sheet) where students look at the base ten form of a number and recognize the number - this includes regular base ten and forms of a number where there needs to be trades/composed/regrouping.
-Turkey Race to 100
-Turkey Race to 1,000
-Turkey Race to 0 (from 100)
-Turkey Race to 0 (from 1,000)
-Turkey Farm Break: exploring looking at a base ten form and then adding or subtracting from the picture (4 different recording sheets included).
For all activities, I encourage that students start by building numbers with base ten blocks to explore.
