Turkey Trotters! A Thanksgiving Force & Motion Activity
Please note! If you already own my Little Pea science packet, the catapult activity is the same with the exception of using a turkey instead of a pea. The plant worksheet is also the same.
Make the Pilgrims and Indians' Thanksgiving table using just 1 piece of standard size (8.5x11) white paper. Step by step directions with photos included. Print out the Thanksgiving food and set the table. The center platter where the turkey should be is empty! Help the turkeys get away from the table using a simple catapult model that requires just 1 plastic or stainless steel spoon. Print out the turkey that will be "trotting" away and glue a pom pom or cottonball onto it to give it some weight (or you can laminate it or tape it without the pompom - it will still work.) Place the turkey onto the handle of the spoon (with the spoon bowl facing up.) Press down on the bowl and watch how far the turkey gets from the Thanksgiving table! Record answers in chart on worksheet. Take turns with others in your group. Bonus worksheet in packet: Thanksgiving Table: Eating Plants. This worksheet has 12 different pictures of plants found on a Thanksgiving table. Students must circle which part of the plant the food comes from. Happy Thanksgiving!
