Celebrate Thanksgiving with Turkey Trouble by Wendi Silvano! Designed for primary students, this comprehensive lesson plan is full of engaging opportunities for discussing problem and solution. This download is loaded with options to customize for the perfect-fit lesson for your students. A wide variety of book companion activities can be done at a time that works best for your class!

Lesson Objective: Students will be able to describe how Turkey’s problem is solved by sequencing key events in Turkey Trouble.

Several options are included, allowing students to identify problem and solution:

  • text dependent questions
  • Story Map graphic organizer to identify and sequence key events connected to problem and solution (can be made into large anchor chart for younger readers)
  • character, story noun, and transition word cards (can be mounted on popsicle sticks for sequencing how Turkey solves his problem)
  • differentiated assessment
  • story event cards on post-its in which students sort and practice orally retelling after reading text

At the end of the lesson, students will answer the following question independently: What problem did Turkey face? How was his problem solved?

**Be sure to check out the preview of this lesson for a more in-depth look at what you’ll get with this 59-page download!!**

For the lesson, teacher resources include: teacher guide with skill rationale/teacher language, lesson plan with stopping points, text-dependent questions (and scaffolding questions for each), expected student responses, post-its to print questions and place in book for easy reference during the lesson. Other student resources included: large, printable form of the essential question, student friendly objective, and questions to post for visual learners.

There are tons of extras and extensions to be used after the lesson for more fun and learning!

  • 5 colorful vocabulary cards and 4 blank cards
  • Student vocabulary graphic organizer to infer meaning of words and provide context clues
  • Vocabulary activity options
  • Students sequence events on post-its. This can be done independently or in groups. Just print one page of post-its per group. Students sort and stick on a sentence strip. Then, practice retelling the story in their own words.
  • Students describe how Turkey’s feelings change from beginning to end. There is a place for students to sketch and write their response.
  • Students think about the actions of Turkey and Farmer Jake. Then, read and sort the descriptive words and glue next to the matching character. Students then choose one additional word to describe each character and write in the two remaining boxes.
  • Students read the short passage. To demonstrate their reading comprehension, students cut and paste pictures into correct spots on the illustration.
  • Students make text-to-self connections by comparing and contrasting Farmer Jake’s Thanksgiving to their own Thanksgiving. Students can sketch or write to complete the Venn Diagram.
  • Students write or sketch what kinds of animals Turkey may disguise himself as if the setting changed…rainforest, desert, zoo.
  • Students choose another disguise for Turkey and describe why it would be the best. Students illustrate Turkey in his new disguise.
  • Students respond to and illustrate a variety of responses in a Turkey Trouble mini-book. There are four pages; just copy, cut in half, and staple!
