Turkish Delight Descriptive Writing and Podcast Project

- PDF

Description
Give your students practice in writing a description and creating a podcast by using Turkish Delight candy as the basis of this fun project. You can use it to supplement your teaching of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe or you can implement it as a stand-alone activity if you do not teach that novel.
Students first brainstorm adjectives to describe the candy. Then they write a paragraph about it that incorporates selected adjectives. Students "publish" their writing by turning their paragraphs into a podcast.
Please note that you will need to buy a box of Turkish Delight and have access to a program that records audio; suggestions are provided in the resource.
A 3-page lesson plan explains in step-by-step detail how to implement the activities in this project. Objectives, a handout for listing adjectives about Turkish Delight, and a graphic organizer are included in this resource. A rubric that students can use to guide their writing and you can use for assessment is provided, too. In addition, there is a checklist for students to use when they rehearse reading aloud their paragraphs prior to making their podcasts.
If you don't have enough computers or devices for each student to make a podcast at the same time -- no worries! Two handouts are included for students to work on while they wait their turn or for after they have finished creating their podcast:
* A template for writing an acrostic poem and
* A worksheet for finding hidden words in a phrase.
An answer key for the hidden phrase handout is also provided for your convenience.
For English Language Learners and other students that need more support with writing, a page with sentence frames to help them get started is included. You'll find pages for writing the first draft and final copy of the paragraphs in this resource as well.
If you work in a Common Core state, the ELA standards that this resource addresses are listed on a separate page. If you work in a WIDA Consortium state, 4 sample Model Performance Indicators at different proficiency levels are provided. Background information is included in the Notes to the Teacher section.
My students really enjoyed this project and yours will, too!
