Looking for an engaging lab experience that is differentiated (modeled after the choice menu), assesses individually within groups working together on the same specimen, and is QUICK and EASY to grade? Check out this tic-tac-toe board for the Turtle Dissection. Students will work in groups and choose a tic-tac-toe that is different from the others in their group. Together, the group will dissect and identify the structures in their chosen tic-tac-toes. Students will point out the structures (and sometimes tasks) and when they are correct, will receive a stamp from you! I usually do a culminating final practical, but this works for an easy participation grade, too. This can also be modified to be more teacher led or more student driven. This approach to dissections has made for a quicker and more engaging experience for everyone AND students are held individually accountable within their groups. Enjoy!
