Phonemic Awareness is a huge indicator of early reading success. Part of Phonemic Awareness is the ability to hear and manipulate sounds. In this packet, students will isolate and delete the final consonant of words to create a new word.
Students will learn to talk like turtles, which is very s-l-o-w-l-y. As they say words, they will learn how to drop off and delete the final sound. This will make a new word. This packet contains 3 different games that will help them do this successfully.
Turtle Talk Bingo: Students will take 1 of the 8 different game boards. The teacher will read one of the cards. Students will listen to the word and delete the final sound. They will cover the matching picture on their board. For example, the teacher will say sunk without the /k/ sound and students will cover the picture of the sun.
Talk Like a Turtle: Put the 40 different word prompts on a ring. Use these as transitions, guided reading warm-ups, or when you have a few extra minutes of waiting time.
Sound Pound: 10 different word mats are included. Place a ball of Play-Doh on each turtle. Students will say the name of the picture. Students will then say the word using Turtle Talk as they come to the last sound they will smash the ball and say the new word.
Talking like a turtle and deleting final consonants has never been so much fun!
