I still get the same anxious feeling I had as a child about the beginning of a new school year! I get excited about the back to school section, the feel of fall in the air, and the smell of new books, even though I have been teaching for many years. If, as a veteran teacher, I am still getting these feelings, I KNOW that many children are just as anxious about their first day of school. For this reason, I do what I can to help them out.
I’ve created a little poem, personalize for each girl and boy, that I include in the special greeting card, “Twas the Night Before Kindergarten!” Inside I include a felt owl for each child to put under their pillow as they sleep the night before school begins. I give these to my new students at our Open House, in an envelope that says, “Do not open until the Night before Kindergarten!” This product is completely editable so you can type in your name and the names of your students. The poem begins like this……
Twas the night before kindergarten and as she prepared,
Little Owl was feeling excited, and a little bit scared!
She tossed and she turned about in her bed,
While visions of school supplies danced in her head!
In the morning she worried, would be her first day!
Would the teacher be nice? Would she still get to play?
So, as she tossed and turned and worried that night,
She had a new friend to make things right!
A little felt owl …..
