This 80 point test assesses advanced students' knowledge of Twelfth Night and its characters, themes, and other literary devices. The test is broken into the following sections:
Multiple Choice (30 points)
-Contains questions regarding plot and character details, as well as several questions about historical context and literary devices such as irony and archetypes.
Short Answer (10 points)
-Students must answer 5 of 6 questions in 2-3 sentences. These questions relate to the use of archetypes, dramatic irony, and minor motifs seen in the play.
Quote Identification & Explanation (30 points)
-For each quote students must identify the speaker and context (who it was spoken to or about). Some quotes contain follow-up questions, asking students to explain the meaning or significance of the chosen quote.
2 Paraphrase Responses (10 points)
-Students must write two separate paragraphs, analyzing a chosen theme from Twelfth Night. These themes include:
- Disguise & Mistaken Identity
- Sexual Ambiguity & Homoeroticism
- The Importance of Status
- Sudden & Reckless Love
This test comes with a detailed answer key and is editable should you need to change anything. It is designed for use in an AP English Literature classroom, so it does require some prior Shakespearean or literary knowledge for success, unless you change some questions.
