Bumper active learning vocabulary task based on the play by Reginald Rose. The puzzle contains 48 words. All are important words from the text with which students should be familiar for discussion and analysis of the it.
Words are .. abstain, accuse, ballot, circumstantial, conflict, convince, coroner, court, defendant, defense counsel, deliberate, evidence, exhibit, fact, fingerprint, foreman, guilty, homicide, hung jury, identify, innocent, judge, juror, jury, lawyer, lie, mandatory, mercy, motive, murder, prejudice, premeditate, prosecution, prove, provoke, psychiatrist, responsibility, slum, testify, testimony, trial, truth, unanimous, verdict, violent, vote, weapon, and witness.
Although students often see the puzzle format as a fun task, this is deceptive. It is an active learning activity that gets them thinking about words (and their meaning in the play).
This is the type of activity that you could use with early finishers, or give to a sub teacher, or use as a filler on a day when you have nothing else prepared. You could use it to pre-teach vocabulary, or to check on students' understanding of key words on completion of the play.
A word bank is supplied to support students. You could redact this to make the puzzle more challenging.
The solution is included. Download the preview file to see the grid and the solution.
