This excel spreadsheet is made to aid teachers who want to tackle reading the book Twelve Years A Slave in class! (Side note: You should totally do it- it is a great book and is less than 300 pages).
There are chapter summaries along with notable characters and important happenings in the chapter. This sheet allows you to further discussion points or ideas you have in class after students have read some chapters at home or in class. It allows you to highlight important events and characters students may have missed. I used this sheet to have students check their personal summaries against mine after our discussions. Checking their summaries against mine helped my students understand how to better summarize factual events (without going overboard with information). It is a great way to scaffold and model summaries.
Next, you will see the vocabulary sorted by chapter. I used this with my 10th grade students for African-American History, so I tried to note and define every term they may have difficulty with. This allows students to get a deeper understanding of the chapters while teaching them the importance of searching for words they do not understand.
Note: This excel spreadsheet is intended for the original book, not the book that is based off of the motion picture.
