Each word in the crossword is a key word in the study of the memoir written by Solomon Northup.
This could be used as a pre-teaching activity, or as a summary task when your study is complete. I like to use it before reading. Introduce students to the words in the puzzle. Get them (group or pair work) to find the meanings of words. Then use the puzzle to cement that knowledge.
