To introduce my 8th grade students to the governments that were part of WWII, we read this sheet in a guided reading format. I modeled with two governments, and then students worked in pairs to complete the remainder of the reading. Once students were done working, the back was reviewed whole class.
This sheet gives an overview of Democracy, Fascism, Communism, Dictatorships, and Anarchy. Each governments economy is also defined. On the back students are asked to plot select governments on a political spectrum, match economies with governments, and infer about personal freedoms. To close students are given seven statements, and need to predict which type of government each statement would be made in.
This activity was great because it generated a lot of discussion, a lot of questions, and set a good base to continue the unit.
We opened the next class with the umbrella picture. Students needed to draw the umbrella in their notes, and then complete the information.
