This is probably one of my favorite projects to teach. It is a unique way to introduce research to students, and it blends it with creative and persuasive writing. The students ultimate goal is to invent a new sport, but first they must become an expert of their own. I had my students to first work in partners to research a sport, then they teamed up with another sport to combine their research. The combined research results in a new sport. For example, cheerleading combined with basketball created cheerball. The students must write a persuasive letter to the commissioner of sports(aka the teacher) persuading them as to why their new sport should be considered for having its' own league. They also get to design logos/uniforms. My students really enjoyed this project. The best part was actually trying out some of their creative new sports at the end of the project.
