The two branches of geography (physical and human / cultural) and the five themes of geography (movement, region, location, interaction, place – MR LIP) are essential frameworks for understanding World Geography. But, they can feel very abstract, especially since they are usually taught at the beginning of a geography unit or course.
This Postcard Exercise is a great solution for making the two branches and five themes more real and for significantly improving understanding, engagement, and retention.
Please note that, while I am only able to show two, this product contains FOUR postcards.
After teaching the two branches and the five themes, tell students that they will be reading postcards from school friends traveling overseas to school friends back home. As they read each postcard they should draw a line connecting each boxed phrase or sentence to the concept it best represents below.
Teach-and-Learn Social Studies recommends reading all four postcards to ensure exposure to and reflection on all five themes and two branches.
More than one correct answer to some of the phrases is possible. Since the goal of this exercise is to reinforce understanding of the two branches and the five themes of geography some flexibility in accepting multiple answers is recommended.
This exercise is also recommended as a learning exercise rather than a formal graded assessment.
An answer sheet is included.
Estimated time does not include the time to teach the two branches and five themes.
