I use both of these charts in my classroom. I keep the sentence starters chart to help students when making their annotations. I encourage them to use different levels from the DoK (Webb’s Depth of Knowledge). When working with partners, I encourage them to push each other to use higher levels of the DoK.
I use the “when do I annotate” as a guide for mini-lessons during writer’s workshop. One day, I will do a lesson on asking questions, and on another, I will do a mini-lesson on making predictions. Keep the chart up so that students can refer to it when making annotations.
