Switch! is a fast paced math game that helps students to learn to look for patterns in addition.
Students each choose 10 of the "Answer" cards and place them face up in front of them. The remaining "Answer" cards are set aside. The "Question" cards each contain an addition number sentence. Each student will take a turn choosing a Question card from the pile. Any of the students can answer the problem. If a student has a card with the sum of the problem on it, he will flip his card over. However, mixed into the Question cards are "Switch!" cards. If a Switch! card is drawn, all players must switch places, leaving their cards behind. The first player to flip over all of his cards is the winner.
This game is designed to help students learn to solve addition sentences quickly and to rely on their knowledge of more familiar problems to solve new ones. Additionally, the fast-paced and unpredictable nature of the game makes it fun. It is a game that students will repeatedly request to play.
This game is aligned to Common Core and VA SOLs.
