This document contains two essay prompts pertaining to the literature and films about the Vietnam War. Though the prompts identify a few different specific texts (Platoon, Apocalypse Now, The Sorrow of War, etc.) these prompts work for and with ANY texts about the war: you can replace the language very easily to tailor these prompts to your class. The first essay asks students to discuss the difficulty of writing a "true" war story, and the second asks students to look at either the portrayals of the Vietnamese people in books/films, or to analyze the attitudes towards the war that shaped each text.
Each contains clear structure, format, and grading requirements.
