Guy de Maupassant's short story Two Friends depicts the how important the simple pleasures in life can be during a time of war, but also the cost those pleasures can have. Included in the anticipation guide is a list of statements that pertain to the story. Students would agree or disagree to the statements prior to reading, then after reading decide if the story supports or refutes the claims. Then student must find specific sentences within the text that provide evidence supporting or refuting the claim. This practice of finding evidence helps develop the skills needed for many state testing formats.
