Two piece pots or sectional forms is a fantastic technique to teach to your ceramic students. This lesson is designed for high school students who already have some ceramic experience. This content is probably best suited for a Ceramics II or III class. The great thing about sectional forms is that it allows you to create larger ceramic pieces than you would probably be able to otherwise. This material is most applicable to wheel throwing, but could also work with hand building. The first stages of the lesson require students to do some simple planning and sketching on scrape paper before working with the clay. It is probably best to show the group some examples online of sectional forms, or even better do a demonstration of your own following the outlined steps on the assignment handout.
This download includes the assignment handout, an assignment rubric, and a student response/review. I find its always really helpful to hear back from my students on these larger ceramic projects to get a better idea of how I can adjust things moving forward.
Hopefully you enjoy these materials!
