These are a set of simple and effective mini-lessons that you can use in an upper elementary classroom to help students become better writers.
The class will review 4 pairs of descriptive paragraphs. After examining and disecting each paragraph together as a class in a very simple manner (circling and crossing out words and phrases) they will generate two rules for writing an effective paragraph. They will discover that an effective paragraph sticks to the point and uses descriptive words.
This lesson can be repeated four times over a week's time, once a week for four weeks, or at any time during the year. It takes about 15-30 minutes to go through each set of paragraphs. Your students will be able to retell you these rules throughout the year before any writing assignment. The lessons are simple, but memorable.
Directions and tips are provided as well as 4 sets of paragraphs. A poster and poster template are also provided for writing the two rules.
This is a simple and effective way to help all the students in your class improve their writing skills and it is done with out using worksheets or even writing. This is a pre-writing activity that can be used prior to any writing assignment.
