The “two sided” vocabulary step book is an interesting activity that takes the place of traditional vocabulary flash cards or worksheet vocabulary activities.
In this activity, students will:
• Group vocabulary words by theme into a step book format
• Cut out the words and definitions, then match them on each tab or step
• Use the words in meaningful sentences
• Draw colorful illustrations to accompany them.
This lesson combines the learning of vocabulary with multiple intelligences and different learning modalities, through the process of matching the words and definitions as they are read/ discussed in class, and the tactile cutting, gluing, writing, and illustrating. When the activity is finished each student has a resource that fits with a specific unit of study or story that can be used as a reference tool and/or study guide to prepare for a test.
This vocabulary step book can easily adapt to any subject area and across multiple grade levels. The duration will vary according the way to the teacher wishes to present the vocabulary lesson. It can be done in as little as 2 days, or it can span a whole unit of study.
The Bonus Life Science Vocabulary Lesson has been included to show how I have used this activity in a third grade life science unit.
The product also includes a video with step by step instructions for making a two-sided step book, and shows a finished step book example!
